Cambodian Man Cripled at the hands of the Khmer RougeAmong those at work in Cambodia is World Relief, a Christian relief and development organization committed to empowering the local church to serve the most vulnerable. In community with the local church, World Relief envisions Cambodia’s most vulnerable people transformed economically, socially, and spiritually.

“Many people look at Cambodia and see a land of heartbreak, devastation and poverty," says Tim Amstutz, Cambodia Country Director and Asia Regional Director for World Relief. "But a new generation of young Cambodians filled with a sense of hope for the future has emerged to help their country step out of the recent shadows of violence, fear and poverty. World Relief is working with them to make that vision a reality.”

World Relief’s ministry in Cambodia is holistic:

  • HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education: helping Cambodians understand the nature of HIV, how it is spread, and tactics to prevent infection. World Relief equips churches, community health groups, and communities to teach their neighbors and bring about lasting behavior change, in addition to support and encouragement through home care to those suffering from the disease.
  • Maternal and Child Health: decreasing infant mortality rates and improve women’s health by way of care groups formed to educate women on vital health information, including pre- and post-natal care. World Relief also works with younger groups with age-specific lessons regarding good health practices.
  • Micro-enterprise Development: combating poverty and ensuring sustainable economic development through CREDIT, a licensed micro-finance institution that provides small loans to clients across the country, along with financial education and training, to support small businesses.

  • Church Mobilization: supporting the rapid growth of a cell church movement that grew out of World Relief’s HIV/AIDS and maternal and child health projects, by providing leadership and discipleship training, as well as training church members to disseminate health information to their communities.
  • Trafficking Prevention: working through community leaders and local churches to prevent the exploitation and abuse of women and children, who are all too often forced into lives of prostitution or forced labor.
